Moving is an important step in everyone's life. And that's why it is crucial to prepare it well, especially on the administrative side. Otherwise, you take risks. Especially since you will be required to complete these procedures no matter what.
How to organize?
There are things to do at different times before and after the move.
Three months before moving
- You need to set a date for the inventory of fixtures. To do this, notify your landlord, the agency, or even the property management that you are leaving. You can then set a date to carry out the inventory of fixtures.
- Check with the CAF to see if you can benefit from the “moving allowance.”
- Also very important, contact the schools to ensure that places are available.
Two weeks before
- Transfer your bank account to a branch near your new location.
- You need to insure the new home. You will also modify your vehicle insurance.
- Cancel the landline phone subscription for the day after the move, just in case. Also notify your mobile phone operator of the address change.
- Cancel the internet contract. Do the same with the television subscription. In both cases, refer to the terms stipulated in each contract.
- Remember to contact the energy providers, gas or electricity, as well as water. For cancellation but also to subscribe to a new contract for your new home. Take the opportunity to request mail forwarding with La Poste. By clicking here, you can declare all your new contact details in just a few clicks.
- Here are all the organizations that must be informed of your move: banks, CAF, health insurance fund, mutual insurance, pension fund, tax office, home insurance company, credit organizations, the service dedicated to the TV license fee, your employer, and all subscriptions you currently have (magazines, newspapers…).
After the move
Once you have moved, you still have a few small things to do. You are required to declare your change of address to the prefecture or sub-prefecture within one month (maximum). This will allow you to update your vehicle registration document or change a license plate. However, you are not required to change the address on your identity card, passport, or driving license. You should also remember to register on the electoral lists of your new city, so that there are no issues later on.
Theoretically, if you follow all these steps carefully, you should not have any problems in terms of administration. And this is probably what can be the most problematic. Much more than the move itself. So make sure to take care of the administrative procedures properly.
